It is with deep sadness that Houston Community College acknowledges the passing of U. S. Congressman and former city of Houston mayor, the Honorable Sylvester Turner. We extend our condolences to Congressman Turner's family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

Congressman Turner was a dedicated public servant who represented Houston with unwavering commitment, integrity and passion. He served in the Texas House of Representatives (District 139) for 27 years and was elected as Houston’s 62nd Mayor in 2015 and re-elected in 2019. Most recently, he served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (Texas Congressional District 18).

Throughout Congressman Turner’s tenure, he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of citizens, championing causes deemed important to the community. As a highly respected leader, he served 21 years in the Texas House of Representatives, six years as Speaker Pro Tempore, and was a chief appropriator, helping to shape the state’s fiscal policy. As Mayor, he guided Houston through seven federally declared natural disasters, including Hurricane Harvey and the COVID-19 pandemic. He was a friend and consistent supporter of Houston Community College.

Congressman Turner’s leadership, vision, and dedication to public service leaves an indelible mark on the lives of many within our community and throughout the country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as we celebrate his life of service.
