Congrats to HCC EMS Instructor Capt. Fred Chambers on receiving the HFD Legacy Honor Award. Captain Fred Chambers has devoted his life to serving others - on the front lines of emergency response, in support of fellow first responders, and in the classroom shaping the next generation of Houston Firefighters. For 32 dedicated years, he served the citizens of Houston with professionalism, courage, and compassion, ultimately rising to the rank of Communication Captain before his retirement in 2011.
For more than three decades, Captain Fred Chambers has shaped the future of the Houston Fire Department through his unwavering dedication to education. His influence is profound - it is estimated that more than 75% of Houston's current firefighters have passed through his EMT class. His commitment to his students extends well beyond scheduled training. Known for his patience and compassion, he has devoted countless evenings and weekends tutoring cadets, ensuring they were fully prepared for the challenges of the National Registry exam.
Under his leadership with Houston City College and the HFD EMT program, cadets achieved a first-attempt pass rate of more than 85%, far surpassing the national average of 70%. This remarkable success contributes to the program's recognition as one of the best in the nation.
Captain Fred Chambers' career is more than a timeline of service - it is a legacy of lives saved, firefighters trained, and standards elevated. From the classroom to the fireground, his impact is deeply woven into the strength and excellence of the Houston Fire Department today.
